Aetiology
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal apparatus is a rare form of cancer that occurs in the salivary glands, specifically the lacrimal glands that produce tears. It is thought to be caused by a combination of environmental factors and genetic mutations.
Diagnosis
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal apparatus is typically diagnosed through imaging tests such as CT scans and MRI scans, as well as biopsy.
Differential diagnosis
Differential diagnoses for mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal apparatus includes other forms of salivary gland cancer, such as adenoid cystic carcinoma and carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma, as well as non-cancerous conditions such as sialadenitis and dacryoadenitis.
Treatment
Treatment for mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal apparatus typically includes surgery to remove the tumor, followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
Prognosis
The prognosis for mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal apparatus is generally good, as long as the cancer is caught early and treated aggressively.
