Aetiology
Iodine-deficiency-related diffuse goitre is caused by a lack of dietary iodine. This can be a result of living in an area with low soil iodine levels, or consuming foods that are low in iodine.
Diagnosis
Iodine-deficiency-related diffuse goitre is diagnosed based on physical examination and blood tests to measure thyroid hormones and iodine levels.
Differential diagnosis
The differential diagnosis for Iodine-deficiency-related diffuse goitre includes other causes of goitre such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, and certain medications.
Treatment
Treatment of Iodine-deficiency-related diffuse goitre involves taking an iodine supplement and eating iodine-rich foods. Surgery may be necessary if the goitre is causing any symptoms or is growing rapidly.
Prognosis
The prognosis for Iodine-deficiency-related diffuse goitre is generally good if the condition is treated promptly and appropriately. With the right treatment, the goitre should shrink and symptoms should improve.
