Aetiology
Other specified sleep-related hypoventilation or hypoxemia disorders are caused by certain medical conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Neuromuscular disorders, Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS), Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome (OHS) and Sleep Apnea.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of other specified sleep-related hypoventilation or hypoxemia disorders is based on a combination of medical history, physical exam and laboratory tests such as arterial blood gas (ABG) tests and pulmonary function tests.
Differential diagnosis
Differential diagnosis of other specified sleep-related hypoventilation or hypoxemia disorders may include other sleep-related breathing disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS).
Treatment
Treatment of other specified sleep-related hypoventilation or hypoxemia disorders usually involves lifestyle modifications such as weight loss, exercise and smoking cessation. In more severe cases, supplemental oxygen and medications may be required.
Prognosis
The prognosis for patients with other specified sleep-related hypoventilation or hypoxemia disorders depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. In general, if the underlying cause is treated early and properly, the prognosis is good.
