Aetiology
Sprain of other specified part of wrist is caused by a sudden and forceful twisting or jerking of the wrist that results in stretching or tearing of the ligaments. It can also be caused by a direct blow to the wrist.
Diagnosis
Sprain of other specified part of wrist is typically diagnosed through a physical examination by a physician. An X-ray may be ordered to rule out any fractures.
Differential diagnosis
Other conditions that may be confused with sprains of other specified parts of the wrist include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, tendonitis, and fractures.
Treatment
Treatment for sprains of other specified parts of the wrist may include rest, ice, compression, elevation, and pain medications. Depending on the severity of the sprain, a splint or cast may be necessary to immobilize the wrist. Physical therapy may also be recommended to help regain range of motion and strength of the wrist.
Prognosis
With proper treatment, the prognosis for sprains of other specified parts of the wrist is usually good. Most patients can expect to make a full recovery within a few weeks.
