Aetiology
Injury of the radial artery at wrist or hand level is usually caused by trauma such as a blunt force impact, a cut, or a severe laceration.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of an injury to the radial artery typically involves physical examination and imaging such as an X-ray or ultrasound. A doctor may also order a Doppler ultrasound to confirm the presence of an injury.
Differential diagnosis
Other potential causes of pain in the wrist or hand region include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and arthritis.
Treatment
Treatment for an injury to the radial artery may involve immobilizing the affected area, elevating the limb, and applying a cold compress. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the vessel.
Prognosis
The prognosis for an injury to the radial artery at wrist or hand level is generally good if the injury is treated promptly and properly. With proper treatment, most patients make a full recovery.
