Aetiology
Contusion of the superficial palmar arch is caused by a direct or indirect blow to the palm of the hand which can cause bruising and swelling.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of contusion of the superficial palmar arch is made based on the patient’s history and physical examination. The area of the arch may appear swollen, tender, and discolored.
Differential diagnosis
The differential diagnosis of contusion of the superficial palmar arch includes other soft tissue injuries such as lacerations, strains, and sprains.
Treatment
Treatment for contusion of the superficial palmar arch typically consists of rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). Pain medications may be prescribed to help with pain relief.
Prognosis
The prognosis for contusion of the superficial palmar arch is generally good with proper treatment. Most patients will make a full recovery within a few weeks.
