Aetiology
Injury of the muscles, fascia or tendons of the peroneal muscle group at the lower leg level is generally caused by a direct blow or trauma to the area, such as a sprain or strain. In some cases, the injury can be caused by overuse or repetitive strain.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually made through a physical exam and imaging studies such as X-ray, MRI or CT scan. Physical exam will reveal swelling, tenderness, bruising and/or decreased range of motion. Imaging studies will help to identify any fractures, dislocations, or tears of the muscle, fascia or tendon.
Differential diagnosis
Differential diagnosis for the injury of the peroneal muscle group includes other injuries of the leg such as a fracture or dislocation of the ankle joint, or a tear of the Achilles tendon.
Treatment
Treatment for the injury of the peroneal muscle group at the lower leg level depends on the severity of the injury. Treatment may include rest, ice, compression, elevation, and physical therapy. In cases of more severe injuries, surgery may be required to repair the damaged muscle, fascia or tendon.
Prognosis
Prognosis for the injury of the peroneal muscle group at the lower leg level is generally good, as long as the injury is treated appropriately and promptly. Recovery time will depend on the severity of the injury, but can range from a few weeks to several months.
