Aetiology
Other specified injury of muscle, fascia or tendon of peroneal muscle group at lower leg level is typically caused by trauma, such as a direct blow or strain. It may also be caused by repetitive strain from activities such as running or jumping.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually made by physical examination, imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans or MRI scans, and/or diagnostic ultrasound.
Differential diagnosis
Other specified injury of muscle, fascia or tendon of peroneal muscle group at lower leg level can be confused with other conditions such as tendinopathy, compartment syndrome, stress fractures, nerve entrapment, and myositis ossificans.
Treatment
Treatment typically includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to reduce swelling and pain. Other treatments may include physical therapy, medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or corticosteroids, and in some cases, surgery.
Prognosis
The prognosis for other specified injury of muscle, fascia or tendon of peroneal muscle group at lower leg level is usually good. Most patients will recover fully with appropriate treatment.
