Aetiology
Other specified injury of the plantar artery of the foot is caused by trauma, such as a hard blow to the foot, or a twisting or crushing injury. It can also be caused by surgery, such as amputation of the foot, or a vascular procedure to treat a blocked artery.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of other specified injury of the plantar artery of the foot is made based on clinical history, physical examination and imaging studies such as Doppler ultrasound, computed tomography angiography, or magnetic resonance angiography.
Differential diagnosis
Other causes of plantar artery obstruction include thromboangiitis obliterans, atherosclerosis, and embolism.
Treatment
Treatment of other specified injury of the plantar artery of the foot is aimed at restoring circulation to the affected area. This may include surgery to repair the damaged artery, or medications to reduce the risk of clotting.
Prognosis
The prognosis for other specified injury of the plantar artery of the foot depends on the severity of the injury and the success of treatment. If the injury is mild and treatment is successful, the prognosis is generally good. However, in severe cases, the prognosis is poor as the injury can lead to tissue death, which could require amputation.
