Aetiology
Heat exhaustion is a heat-related illness that is caused by exposure to high temperatures and inadequate hydration. It is a form of dehydration caused by the loss of fluids and electrolytes through sweating.
Diagnosis
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include fatigue, headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, sweating, and increased heart rate. Diagnosis is based on a physical exam and medical history.
Differential diagnosis
Heat exhaustion is often confused with heatstroke, so it is important to differentiate between the two. Heatstroke is more serious and requires immediate medical attention.
Treatment
Treatment for heat exhaustion includes rest, rehydration with fluids and electrolytes, proper nutrition, and cooling measures such as a cool bath or shower.
Prognosis
Heat exhaustion is usually reversible with prompt treatment. Most people recover without any long-term complications. However, if left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke and other serious health problems.
