Aetiology
Exhaustion due to exposure to extreme heat is a condition caused by prolonged exposure to hot, humid weather. It can be caused by activities such as outdoor work or exercise in hot temperatures, or by simply being in direct sunlight for too long. Signs and symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, nausea, headaches, and muscle cramps.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of exhaustion due to exposure to extreme heat is based on the patient’s medical history and physical examination. Additionally, a doctor may order laboratory tests to assess dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and liver or kidney function.
Differential diagnosis
Exhaustion due to exposure to extreme heat must be differentiated from other conditions such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration.
Treatment
Treatment for exhaustion due to exposure to extreme heat is focused on relieving symptoms and preventing further damage. This includes immediate rest, cooling measures, and hydration. Patients may also need to take medications to help with nausea, headaches, and muscle cramps.
Prognosis
The prognosis for exhaustion due to exposure to extreme heat is generally good with appropriate treatment. Most patients make a full recovery with no lasting effects. However, in extreme cases, the condition can be fatal.
